Specialty Treatment - Pregnant / Postpartum / Pelvic Health

Pregnancy
Pregnancy is a beautiful time of change. Many individuals have pain or dysfunction that limit their ability to participate in their usual work or recreational activities during pregnancy. I can help with this, not only by providing treatment techniques to decrease pain but also by guiding and educating my patients to keep them as active as they can be, throughout their pregnancy.

Postpartum
In Europe it is standard practice for an individual who has given birth to be sent to a physical therapist. I believe that this should be the case everywhere. At a postpartum visit, I will of course address whatever specific concerns the patient has, (pain, incontinence, separation of the abdominals, pain with intercourse, etc…) but I will also perform a thorough screen with my goal being to guide the patient through the healing that occurs during this time and assist with their return to the lifestyle they led before and during their pregnancy. I also work with individuals that have experienced a loss, at any stage of pregnancy. These individuals often benefit from physical therapy because while loss is difficult emotionally; it can also be difficult physically.

Pelvic Health
I believe that pelvic health is an integral part of providing holistic care. I am able to address all of my patient’s musculoskeletal concerns from head to toe, including the many muscles included in the pelvic floor. Our pelvic floor is an integral part of body, providing support to our pelvic organs, allowing for proper urinary and bowel function, providing stability as part of the core, and providing sexual health/pleasure. I can address pelvic specific concerns including incontinence (any amount of leakage although common, is not “normal”), pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, pain with urination or bowel movements, pressure/heaviness in the pelvic region, just to name a few. I can also address hip, low back, and abdominal pain that may be related to your pelvic floor.

How Do I Treat?

Using a comprehensive treatment style, I will ensure ALL aspects of your life and your body are being considered. Treatment is more than just the work we do during your appointment. A key component to my treatment is a focus on education with the ultimate goal of maximizing each person’s quality of life through knowledge and awareness of their body.

Examples of specific treatment techniques include:

  • Manual therapy techniques including soft tissue manipulation, joint mobilization, fascial release, and visceral mobilization.

  • Neuromuscular facilitation and re-education to increase muscular function

  • Specific exercises to increase muscular performance and improve movement patterns

  • Education and coaching to empower my clients and decrease fear around pain/injury
